Lalit guava trees need a lot of nitrogen, phosphoric acid, potash, and some magnesium to produce the most fruit. Here are some tips for fertilizing Lalit guava trees:
    • When to fertilize
Fertilize young trees every one to two months, and mature trees three to four times a year. In north India, fertilize rainy season crops in the first week of May, and winter season crops in the first week of July.
    • How much to fertilize
Apply a 6-6-6-2 formula to the soil before the growing season starts, and then three times during the growing period. You can also apply organic manure, phosphorus, potash, and half of the nitrogen in June–July, and the remaining nitrogen in October–November.
    • How to apply
Dig a shallow ring that’s 30 cm wide, about 1 m from the trunk, and apply the fertilizer or manure there. You can also spray the tree with a 1% urea solution during new flushes to increase yield.
    • Other tips
Spray the tree with a 10% urea solution or 600 mg/liter of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) in May when most of the flowers have opened. Prune the terminal parts of the shoots by 20–30 cm between April 20–30 to avoid rainy season crops.

Ideal Conditions

Lalit Guava, a popular variety known for its sweet taste and high yield, thrives under specific conditions. Here’s a guide to provide the ideal environment for growing Lalit Guava grafted plants:

  1. Climate: Lalit Guava grows best in subtropical to tropical climates. It prefers warm temperatures ranging between 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F). However, it can tolerate slight fluctuations in temperature.
  2. Sunlight: Ensure the plant receives plenty of sunlight. Lalit Guava plants require full sun exposure for at least 6 to 8 hours a day to thrive and produce abundant fruit.
  3. Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil is crucial for Lalit Guava plants. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. Sandy loam or loamy soils with good organic matter content are ideal.
  4. Pruning: Regular pruning is essential to maintain the shape of the tree, improve air circulation, and promote fruit production. Remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches and prune to encourage branching and fruiting.
  5. Mulching: Mulching helps conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as compost or shredded leaves, around the base of the tree, taking care to keep it away from the trunk to prevent rot.
  6. Pest and Disease Control: Monitor the plant regularly for pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and fruit flies, as well as common diseases like anthracnose and powdery mildew. Use appropriate cultural practices, such as maintaining good sanitation and proper pruning, and consider organic or chemical control methods if necessary.
  7. Support: Provide support to young trees, especially if they are exposed to strong winds or heavy fruit loads, to prevent breakage.

Watering Periods

Provide consistent watering, especially during the flowering and fruiting stages. While Lalit Guava is drought-tolerant once established, it requires regular watering during dry spells to ensure proper growth and fruit development. However, avoid waterlogging as it can lead to root rot.

Fertilization

Apply balanced fertilizer with a higher ratio of nitrogen (N) during the plant’s active growing season (spring and summer). Switch to a fertilizer with a higher ratio of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) during the flowering and fruiting stages to promote fruit development.
